About FSC

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organization established in 1993 who’s vision is that the world’s forests meet the social, ecological and economic right and needs of the present generation without compromising those of future generations. The FSC sets standards to ensure forestry practices are environmentally and socially responsible as well as economically viable. The development of forest management standards, a “chain-of-custody” (COC) certification, and independent auditors provide recognition and value to products bearing the FSC label in the marketplace. This allows customer to put their trust in the FSC label. Over 70 countries around the world have forests that have been certified to FSC standards.

The FSC currently identified 10 principles and 57 criteria to ensure well-managed forests. These include provision for protecting biological diversity and fragile ecosystems. FSC certified areas continue to grow at a high rate all over the world and now represent an area equal to 7 percent of the forests used primarily for production purposes.
